No-Time-To-Explain.jpg

Rating: 6/10

Overview:

You time travel back into the past to find yourself to help with the immanent... you know, there's no time to explain.

A side scrolling action game with simple controls and a fun gun mechanic

My views:

This a very simple and addictive game in the same vein as super meat boy, with its quick fail and retry gameplay you will have lost 2-3 hours playing this game without even realising it. If you are looking for a unique side scrolling platformer with some brilliant humour then I implore you to give this ago

A bit of background

No time to explain started off life as a flash browser game and as such has very simple controls and a very simple 2D graphical design, and this simplicity gives the game a certain naïve charm that I haven't experienced in a game before. It was developed by a small team of people and really is quiet an impressive feat.

The gameplay

The controls are very simple with your character only being able to run, jump and shoot which felt like a great throw back to my childhood playing Donald duck's Quackshot. despite these simple controls however the level design turned out to be quite challenging and I think it is intentionally a difficult game, I died many times, but with the game not needing to load between your deaths it never induced gamer rage, in fact without the stress of lives or load times it became really addictive to just keep trying and trying and dying and dying.

The way in which you platform in this game was brilliant, as you can see in the gif above you use your gun to propel yourself into the air and over objects and gap to reach the end of the level, as you go through the game you will also have to use other weapons to traverse the stage, which all fire differently, for instance the shotgun you get in the second section of levels cannot be continuously fired like the laser gun you see above it has one shot that propels you in the opposite direction that you fire and you cannot shoot again until you safely land.

What also caught me by surprise is that on a few levels there are different ways to reach the end portal. On one level I had propelled myself in the air up against what looked like a sheer rock face and I actually went above the level and bypassed all the dangers and dropped out straight at the end level portal, originally I though I had found a flaw in the game but then I ran into a collectable up there which just shows that despite its simple look in is real quite a deep game.

My last thoughts

This is a shorter than normal review because the game is so widely simple. There is honestly not much more to say about it apart form it makes a great pick up and play title that will make you forget the time. I wasn't going to do any sort of review on this game but after 10 minuets turned into 2 hours without me realising I thought that it might be worth a quickie.
